We’re looking for an experienced Godot developer who can help us press the “just add multiplayer” checkbox.
We’d like to add remote multiplayer to Lancer Tactics and need help from a programmer who has already been through that rodeo. Lancer is a TTRPG that was designed to be played cooperatively with friends, so the fact that you can’t do so in Lancer Tactics has been a stumbling block from day one. We’re inspired by the sort of collaborative play seen in Slay the Spire 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, and The Yawhg and want to enable those kinds of social experiences.
If you’re someone who is fluent in the tools and restrictions of multiplayer in Godot and are available for about six months of full-time work followed by six more months of part-time work, we’d love to chat! An ideal applicant would also be familiar with Lancer or similar tabletop RPG experiences, have demonstrated creative gameplay design chops in addition to their technical expertise, and are able to take the initiative in tackling problems & bringing projects across the finish line.
This job posting will stay open for at least two weeks (until September 12) and then either close (if we’ve found someone) or stay open on a rolling basis until we fill the role.
NOTE: This is a contract position for at least 1,530 total hours of work over a year.
Planned Timeline & Milestones
In consulting peers, we’ve sketched out & budgeted for this as a rough timeline of the planned work (though no plan survives meeting reality; we expect this time to run long).
- Initial investigation work, getting familiar with the codebase, and consulting on planned designs for various parts of the game. (10 hr)
- Building out a proof of concept and foundation for multiplayer engine support. (2 weeks // 80 hr)
- Implement multiplayer engine support for all supported game modes. (6 months full-time // 960 hr)
- Ideally this phase would be finished by then end of Q2 2027.
- Support and multiplayer bugfixes. (6 months half-time // 480 hr)
Responsibilities & Project Requirements
- Develop & implement a technical strategy for adding remote multiplayer to the existing engine.
- This should ideally also allow for multiple inputs from the same client to allow for local multiplayer.
- Help design & adapt gameplay modes to allow for the best multiplayer experiences possible.
- Campaign modules may have player-created mods that will need to be synchronized between all clients.
- We do not allow LLM or similar machine-generated content in this project. All code needs to be human-authored.
Qualifications
- Required: Has shipped a multiplayer game.
- Experience with Godot.
- The more the better, but personal projects are fine.
- Please don’t submit an application that doesn’t even mention Godot.
- Fluency in GDscript.
- We’ll need to integrate your solution with the existing codebase & content which uses `await` as its backbone.
- Hands-on experience working with tabletop RPGs and/or turn-based strategy games
- Bonus: knowledge of Lancer TTRPG
- Ability to communicate clearly and often
- Team is based in Pacific Time, but willing to work with anyone globally
Compensation
- $50/hr
- Paid monthly on submission of a timesheet with hours tracked by you.
